I enjoy and admire Gay Talese’s work. I do not enjoy or admire his recent admission that there are no female nonfiction writers whose work he has loved. (A summary, if you haven’t been following the story.)
In response, Ann Friedman compiled “The Queens of Nonfiction: 56 Women Journalists Everyone Should Read” at New York Magazine. The list represents over five decades of excellent nonfiction writing by women, most of whose names and careers have been forgotten. If you need some Friday afternoon procrastination, delve into one of the linked articles. It’s high time we give these writers the recognition they deserve.
