I missed this news over the summer, but have taken a few minutes today to appreciate the incredible accomplishments of Chester Nez and the other Navajo code-talkers who were instrumental to American military activity in WWII. These men fought for a country that had treated them terribly and which would continue to batter them with cruelty and injustice following their service. It wasn’t until 1968 that their story became declassified and gained any attention. Chester Nez was the last surviving code-talker. Had it not been for him and the other 28 Navjao soldiers who created the code, the course of history would have run in different, and likely far worse, directions.
